Book Review Treatise on Heart Disease in Indians Enas A. Enas, MD, and Basil Varkey, MD (Jaypee Brothers Medical Publications: New Delhi / London—available on Amazon.com) Cardiovascular disease remains the foremost cause of death worldwide despite the extraordinary advances made in its prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Y et, within this global epidemic lies a particularly troubling paradox: people of Indian and South Asian origin continue to experience coronary artery disease (CAD) at an earlier age and, in many instances, with greater severity than many other populations. The burden is not confined to India. It extends to Indians and other South Asians living throughout the world. In India, coronary artery disease and stroke have increased in both urban and rural populations, and the future trajectory remains deeply concerning. Treatise on Heart Disease in Indians addresses this important and long-overlooked disparity. The book is the culmination of Dr. Enas’s decades-long clinic...

Book Review: Dr. Khaleel Ashraf

I just finished Arundhati Roy’s "Mother Mary Comes To Me", and what a remarkable book it is! I have always admired her writing - loved both The God of Small Things and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, but this may be her finest work, and it is not even fiction. Her real life seems more compelling and dramatic than anything she could have invented, although her fiction has clearly been shaped by many of these experiences. The book is a testament to the extraordinary power of human language. At a time when we are increasingly anxious about artificial intelligence taking over language and creative expression, it is refreshing to encounter writing of such emotional depth and originality. In my case, I listened to the audiobook on Audible, narrated by author herself, which made the experience even more intimate and powerful. The book contains countless unforgettable lines. Two have stayed with me. She describes her deeply complicated relationship with her mother, a woman s...

Sangamagrama: Visiting the Cradle of Indian Mathematics (Blog post by Dr. Ravi Raghavan)

We recently made a trip to Sangamagrama, the legendary 13th-century school of mathematics founded by Madhava of Sangamagrama. And let me tell you, it was a real goosebumps moment for us. The irony is striking: this place of immense historical importance was just 7 miles from my childhood home, yet I didn't even know it existed during my school days! To stand there, in the very place where such mathematical and astronomical excellence flourished, was awe-inspiring. This was knowledge that predated European knowhow, telescopes, and the generation of Newton—a testament to a brilliant, often under-appreciated, South Indian tradition in mathematics that later peaked with the likes of Ramanujan. The site is incredibly humble and is preserved as part of the Irinjidapilly Krishna temple, where Madhava lived and worked. The original writings of this astronomical and mathematical genius are famously preserved on two large, 700-year-old stone tablets. Many looked at the moon, but it ...
